September 02: Three Short Dreams

I had a few shorter dreams early this morning since I kept getting woken up by construction outside.  Here goes:

The dreams: In the first one I remember, I was staying the night at a friend's house - only he and his family weren't aware of this, apparently.  I was sleeping in the middle of their kitchen floor unbeknownst to everyone there.  Early in the morning my friend stumbled into the kitchen and was very surprised to see me laying there on the floor, covered in blankets.  I don't remember exactly why I was there or how I explained the situation to him - all I remember is how awkward it was.  Either way, after a while I heard his mom yelling from her room, asking what was going on down there.  I soon woke up from this dream.

The next dream I remember was really short, but a nostalgic one.  I was talking with a Japanese friend of mine on Skype; the next thing I know, I was in Japan, hanging out with her.  We were driving around Tokyo in a van, enjoying the evening.  That's about it for that one.

The final dream was a bit longer than the other two.  In this dream, I was watching a completely new Three Stooges episode.  At first I was unsure, but I soon realized that they had either gotten the original actors to reprise their roles or uncanny doubles to fill their shoes.  Either way, the episode embodied the classic slapstick humor of the original.  In this episode, the Stooges were at a large restaurant, partaking in a buffet.  After a while, as with any of my dreams that involve movies or similar media, I ended up in this locale and participating.  By this point it wasn't really a Three Stooges episode anymore so much as just me choosing food from the buffet and then eating.  The last thing I remember is eating a big piece of fish and picking out the bones.  And this is about where I bored myself awake.

My thoughts:  I'm again having dreams about sleeping in weird places. I wonder what that means....

The second dream was interesting, simply because I rarely dream about this friend, and yet today I got an email from her, saying she would be in the states and visiting my area in a few weeks. A premonition?

And the final dream I understand completely:  I've been watching a lot of classic Stooges and fretting over the rumors of a Three Stooges remake in the works (which will be terrible as these things usually are, and yet more so because there's no need to ruin the Three Stooges).

September 01: Jungle Horse

Just two short dreams to record for today:

The dreams:  The first dream was pretty short.  I was in an elementary school serving as a classroom assistant.  My class a celebrity guest who was performing and entertaining as a special treat for the students (I'm not sure who exactly the celebrity was, but he vaguely resembled Robin Williams).  The celebrity was a master at impersonations; he also had a large bird that assisted in his performance.  The show began when the bird gave out a cry that perfectly mimicked the school alarm bell.  I was outside of the classroom, and initially thought it was the real bell until I walked in and saw that it was the bird making the noise.  This evidently signaled the beginning of the act, much to the excitement and delight of the children watching; the class quickly settled down to enjoy the show.

The celebrity entertainer introduced his act by asking the children to identify which animal he was impersonating based on the sound he made.  He then began to roar and growl very dramatically, to me sounding like a lion or other large cat; however, the children weren't so quick to pick up on the animal, and began shouting out numerous incorrect guesses.  The actor continued to pantomime the animal as the shouted guesses became more and more sporadic, until one young boy shouted out "jungle horse!"  This suggestion so greatly caught the entertainer off guard as to cause him to lose his train of thought and drop the act completely; he stared, perplexed, at the young boy, and all pretense of the animal act was replaced by a silent stunned confusion.  I'm sure his thoughts mirrored my own: I pondered what in the world a "jungle horse" could be.... Either way, it was such a funny scenario that I actually woke up laughing from it.

The next dream was also quite short.  In it, I was working at my previous job in the digital print lab at the art school I was employed at in California a few years ago.  As is often the case in dreams, the location was a strange construction of my subconscious, but the people were familiar coworkers and friends.  I was attempting to do some test prints on one of the fancy new printers that had been acquired in my absence, but I was unable to find suitable paper on which to print.  The majority of the dream was spent with me looking for decent printer paper while talking with my coworkers about various things.  After a while, I woke up.

***

My thoughts:  The first dream is one of those dreams where I wake up laughing from something funny in my dream, usually a strange word or phrase.  If I'm quick enough, I'll write it down before I forget.  While I'm not completely sure that the child's animal of choice was "jungle horse," that's the closest I can remember to whatever crazy animal he came up with.

The second is a fairly common dream type: it seems like whenever I leave from somewhere such as my home town, previous school, or place of employment, I'll dream about it after a while.

April 27, 2009: Two Shorter Dreams

The first dream that I remember was rather short and simple: just my friend and I playing some sort of video game at his house, hanging out and chatting. Nothing else much happened until the dream ended shortly thereafter.

In the second dream, I was at the school where I work, walking around in the main building of the campus. I was accompanied by a girl that I don't know in the waking world, who was apparently my co-worker. We had to go down to the end of the main hallway to a seldom-used stairwell, in order to flip a circuit breaker in the basement. About the time that we finished doing that, I realized I was dreaming. The girl and I walked back up the stairs and out into the main hall, but there was a huge crowd of students impeding any traffic through nearby doors or down the hallway. The lucid dream ended abruptly, before much in the way of lucid dreaming could be done, when my alarm went off.

Not much to say about this short selection of dreams. Frankly I'm surprised that I've been having dreams and remembering them every night since I started keeping a journal.

April 26, 2009: Camping Trips, Police High-Jinks, and Nostalgic Memories

Look: Labels for the dream posts! Now you too can just skip the crappy ones and go straight to "sexy." When I start running into more common themes I'll add more labels.

*****

In the first dream, I was out on a camping trip in the woods with some friends and family. We were setting up tents in our camp site, when dark clouds above flashed brilliantly with lightning. I counted off the seconds before the loud, prolonged boom of thunder announced that the lightning was very close - practically right over us. I ran into my tent for shelter from a sudden downpour of rain. This is about all I remember of the dream before it ended.

In the second dream, I was in some sort of coastal town, driving an older Toyota Camry. After a while I was standing near the car and talking to a police officer; I don't remember if I had been pulled over, or if I was already out of the car and ended up talking to him. He asked if he could drive my car, and if I would accompany him; he said that he wanted to check something out. I agreed, and we sped off.
I was surprised at how aggressively he drove, swerving around corners and flooring the accelerator. When we got down to the beach, he drove out onto the sand, and began to peel out in circles, doing donuts and letting the car spin and drift as he sped around the beach. I was a bit confused, but it was fun, so I just laughed and enjoyed the ride. After a while he pulled up onto the asphalt and stopped, and we got out of the car. He asked me why the car had such trouble accelerating, and I told him that it needed a new gas pedal. The dream ended shortly thereafter.

I recall only fragments from another dream about a friend from my distant past. To see her again made me very happy - but as usual in these dreams, I struggled with the premonition that our reunion was to be short-lived. Sure enough, as always, the dream ended too soon.

*****

I'm guessing my dream about lightning and rain was influenced by a book I was reading last night, wherein the characters are caught in a blinding downpour.

I don't know what to say about the one with a police officer, who was driving my car around like a teenager on a snowy night in a grocery store parking lot. Maybe I don't understand driving conditions on a sandy beach, but I'd think we'd just get stuck in the sand doing tricks like that as opposed to participating in some sort of Tokyo drift: beach variety. I also like how the gas pedal was obviously the problem with my car's ability to accelerate. Duh, that's what you push to go faster!

I have dreams about this particular friend all the time, and they are always fraught with conflicting emotions. I feel an intense happiness to see her again, to talk to her and reminisce; but there is always a foreboding sense in these dreams that she is going to vanish at any moment, or that I'll wake up too soon. These are the crueler instances of lucid dreaming, when she'll just disappear and I'll know that it has all been a dream.
I don't know why I have these dreams, or why they bother me so much; I don't even think about this person in waking life until after I have them. These are the dreams that I wake up from and struggle between nostalgia and melancholy.

April 23, 2009: Friends and School

I had a rather vivid dream wherein I was in a small, unfamiliar clothing store. In the dream, a friend of mine (whom I haven't talked to in a long time) was an employee at this boutique, and he was busy organizing the clothing on the racks. He looked terrible; he was obviously depressed, withdrawn, and downcast, glumly going about his tasks while avoiding interaction with the patrons. However, I was happy to see him, if a bit anxious, so I walked up and greeted him nervously.
I was concerned that he wouldn't be glad to see me, and with our initial contact that seemed to be true - he looked very unhappy when he saw me approaching. However, I made it a point to chat with him and find out why he had disappeared off the radar. The more we talked, and the more I observed him, the more I began to think that he must have developed some deeper mental issues that must have arisen since last I saw him; he had developed an extreme social awkwardness and discomfort in dealing with people as seen by his interactions with the customers in the store. For some reason, at one point, he was wearing an Phantom of the Opera-esque mask, though as dreams go, it quickly disappeared.
Through our dialogue I was able to get him to come out of his shell a bit, and after a while he was laughing and acting like his familiar self. Even so, he found a point to confront me as to why I hadn't contacted him in so long; to this I replied that I had tried in vain to keep in touch with him, but he would never return calls or emails. This is about where this dream ended.

The second dream was a shorter one, again about school. In this dream, the instructor had an announcement about test results, in which she reported that most people did well except for me, calling me out by name. I was left to fret about how abysmal my score could be that she would single me out. The dream ended shortly thereafter.

*****

Well recording dreams is turning out to be more of a bummer than anything humorous. I'll probably add tags so people can skip the unfunny ones.

I've had dreams similar to the first, about friends that I've lost touch with and yet there's something unresolved about it. I guess, subconsciously, I want to reconnect, make amends, and go back to the way things were with them. Oh well... I find it humorous that my brain realized how melodramatic my dream was getting, and, probably tongue in cheek, gave my friend a Phantom of the Opera mask. So emo!

And I've already gone over the reason for my school dreams. Finals are just around the corner I suppose...

April 21, 2009: Yet Another Beowulf Movie?

The only dream I can fully remember from last night was about yet another movie adaptation of Beowulf. Actually, the plot had nothing to do with the actual Beowulf poem; it was about a mother who was forced to give up her child in order to hide it from the marauding enemy forces of an opposing tribe. That child would grow up to be Beowulf, a great leader who would go on to exact vengeance against the enemy faction. And it was set in contemporary times for some reason; everyone was wearing suits, like it was some sort of mob film adaptation.

I guess I was watching it at a friend's house, because later he gave me a ride home. Only he ended up dropping me off on the shoulder of the freeway out in the middle of nowhere. That's about where the dream ended.

*****

Whenever I dream about movies, they are always about as far off from the actual movie as they can get and still have recognizable features, such as iconic characters. The most common movies in my dreams are those from the Star Wars franchise, which are almost always about the prequel films. I started having them between the releases of Episode I: the Stupid Name and Episode III: Pretend This Trilogy Didn't Happen. The dream versions of these films, though having recognizable characters such as Darth Vader, are so horrendously bad that they are really uncomfortable to sit... through...

Oh.
